Peru Days 1-4

Well, hmmm. Where to start? Four days after my birthday we went to Peru to visit Spencer's sister and her family that have recently moved to Lima. After a long flight we landed in Lima where it really didn't feel very 3rd world. Everyone spoke English and was very helpful. They even shuttled us past a HUGE customs line because we had our small children with us. And then all of the sudden it was 3rd world because there was a gate w/ no sign of which way to go and a mass of humanity pushing against said gate that was reminiscent of a futbol game - or so I'm told. Luckily I saw my brother in law and we high tailed it out of there. To be honest I'm not sure how much of the actual Peru we experienced because we were clearly tourists, we don't speak the language, and our family that we're staying with lives a very comfortable lifestyle. So for the first few days of our trip we went to parks with the girls' cousins, visited the beach, and went to their church. We also visited a plaza in Peru where the President lives and viewed the changing of the guard.

This was a strange experience as we're not sure the guards were ever replaced and that it seemed almost like the jv team was called in that day. The band director would cut the band off mid piece and the entire procession was replayed three different times. There was a lot of down time for people to come up to our children and try to pet their hair. During these days we were able to try a lot of different Peruvian dishes, some of which were delicious. Chirimoya was by far my favorite drink - it's a custard apple that grows in the jungle. Inca cola was not my favorite drink, it's a cross between bubble gum and creme soda. We also had lomo saltaldo, Aji de gallina, papas rellanos, and a TON of other yummy food. It helps that my sister in law has a great live in cook - hey, it's a 3rd world country, what do you expect?

How absolutely fabulous! Almost makes me want to brave the plane flight with my own kiddos. Truly fabulous.

Wow, how was your flight there? What are they doing in Peru? It looks like so much fun!

Wow, this is really impressive. I just recently swore I would never visit Utah with my children again, an 8 hour (I don't really remember how long it is) flight into a 3rd world country wouldn't even register on my list of things to try with small children. Well done!
Also, I have some very similar pictures from our trip to Peru about 5 years ago. I like how you said that people wanted to pet your girls' hair. We spent some time in the non-touristy parts of Peru and people would follow me and stare at my height, blond hair, and blue eyes. I can only imagine the commotion a whole blond family cruising through town would stir.
What an awesome experience!

That is so cool. I'm curious too of how the flight was?
