Peru Days 5-9

For all you non-Inca experts, this is Machu Picchu and it was discovered by Hiram Bingham in 1911. The ruins were amazingly intact, although covered by jungle growth when Bingham showed up, because the Spanish never knew Machu Picchu existed. Can you imagine uncovering this city? The pictures don't do it justice because the surrounding Andean mountains are unlike anything I'd ever seen. They really seem jungle like, everything is so green and lush, and steep. Really really steep. By the time we reached Machu Picchu we'd been traveling for two days from Lima, Peru just to get there. We took a flight into Cusco, Peru - which is so quaint as evidenced here...

and then took the most amazing train ride to a city that we'd all like to forget called Aquas Calientes. A terrible nights sleep plus food poisoning for my niece led to a rough morning with crabby kids. But they all pulled together and we all took a bus up 2200 feet to fall in love with Machu Picchu.

First of all, you look way too cute to be hiking around Latin America.

Just a crazy side... my sis-in-law went to Peru earlier this year and climbed the fiveish days on the Inca Trail to get to it! Her pictures are unbelievable!

I am totally jealous that you guys got to visit my old mission field. I'd love to chat about the experience sometime. Lauren and I went back a few years ago and had some similar experiences. And can I just say that I am AMAZED that you pulled all of this off with the kids in tow. Unbelievable!

On a related note, its sad (and our fault) that we haven't gotten together yet. If I can dig up tickets to a Lakers/Clippers/Kings game from work, would you two be interested?
