Do You Have One Of These?
This little boy is such a gem. I LOVE LOVE LOVE him. He is sweet, and cuddly, curious, handsome, smart, extra-coordinated, and smiley - just a delight all around. But he might be the end of me. It's his second birthday today, so we gave him a set of kid tools this morning. He opened them by repeatedly saying, "oh wow" and "cool, cool, cool". Warmed my heart. He carried them around the house and set to work hammering, drilling, using his screw driver to fix things, etc. And I thought, "well played Andrea!".
Then at about 11 am I hear some crying. I say, "come here Adam and tell me what's wrong." He didn't come, which is weird because he loves sympathy. I wait a few more moments, more weird quiet crying, and decide I better go check. I walk in to my son sitting in a pool of blood while he just looks confused. I pick him up, yell to Spencer who is luckily working from home that day. I have a weird sense of calm till I hand him off to Spencer, and then my knees buckle and I'm just trying to stay upright. We start wiping away blood, trying to find the source as it's on his legs, arms and hands. Turns out it's coming from a finger, just one little finger. Spencer has the sense to apply pressure, keep his arm raised above his heart - all that good stuff. I run around the house trying to collect first aid supplies and think ER visits etc. I call my Dad (some habits die hard), but he's in with a patient. I get a hold of a nurse at the pediatricians. She is asking me questions that make me go all light headed. But after 20 minutes or so his hand stops bleeding, Adam clearly needs a nap, and we put him to bed. The nurse didn't insist that we bring him in, she said that once we can get a better look at the finger she can recommend a course of action.
I go out and buy pizza and watermelon for his birthday dinner. By the time we get around to checking the wound it's almost 4pm. It is not pretty. While I type this Spencer has taken him to an Urgent Care and I'm trying to wait patiently. We're still not positive how he did the damage. My best guess is one of the toy clamps separated at a seam and his finger got pinched in between the plastics. When I showed him the toy and asked him if that's what happened he used a deep voice and brought in his other tools to hit the clamp. It felt a little like talking with a monkey; an adorable, precious, Adam monkey. I hope he gets home soon. I know he'll be fine, but I really pray I never walk into that situation ever again. And thank goodness these ER runs have been when Spencer was available. Apparently we're on a 6 month cycle. I'll talk to you about it again in December.

As a boy who tore his finger open at his own birthday party, I empathize with young Adam. As a parent of a boy who left bloody thumbprints all over the apartment (he tried to pry open a cracked piece of glass in a picture frame), I sympathize with you and Spencer!
Thanks Josh, this gives me comfort. Someday with any luck he'll be a Dad taking his own fantastic son to the ER.
oh no! poor adam. i'm so glad spencer was there to help you. probably about 5ish months ago eli fell into a corner and cut his head. when he gets hurt he just pushes on it hard and wont let anyone look at it. so when he was scream crying, with his hand on his forehead i quickly saw blood dripping down his head/arm i knew we were going to have some issues. i grabbed a towel, lied him down on it, and tried prying his hands off his head so i could get a look at the cut (after i tried seeing it like a normal person : ). i was starting to get worried cause more blood was coming and eli was just acting like a psycho, was inconsolable and i didn't know what to do on my own with isaac hovering around. just then i heard the door open and tanner just happened to come home early that day randomly... and just at the perfect time. eli had to get his cut glued back together on his forehead and he still has a scar from it... but oh man, we gotta be thankful for our spouses in these types of situations!
Poor kid! Poor mama, too. I'm so sorry he did that on his birthday, but he'll be just fine and up and tooling around (pun intended) in the morning, bright and early is my guess! :) Boys are so resilient. Happy birthday to your two-year-old!
Geeeeez. Glad to hear the full story, sorry Anne. And sorry adman.. Im sure it will be fine :(
from Lorena: Ugh...that made me feel all woozy just reading about it. Glad it was just his finger and that he will be alright in the end.
I'm sorry. That is so scary! Lots of love to you guys- hope that everything's looking great now!
Happy Birthday, Adam!
hope he recovers quickly!
