Word of the Day

Millinery - a hat shop.  Degas would accompany Mary Cassatt into millinerys.  Here is an example of one of his paintings inspired by a visit.

Here is a less inspired picture

Are you dissing my art?

No way, I should have said the model was less inspiring, but referencing myself as a model was a little too nauseating.

That painting has always driven me a little crazy. The angle is weird so it looks like that hat on display is kind of on her head- it really annoys me.

Maternity model, maybe? I always wondered where they got those beautiful preggos to model clothes. Maybe it could be you?

To clarify, this picture is like a month old. Also, I think this slightly raised perspective was a favorite of Degas - I'm thinking of that painting where you can see all the way into the back of a stage, but also get a comprehensive view of the balletrina's in the front. And Sarah, of course you know this piece, you're so Chicago :)

Did you know our Grandma Winnie had a millinery shop in Salt Lake? Aunt Susie has the collection of hats. We used to have great fun modeling them and I bet Kate and Anna would, too.
