Seeking Advice

In this unusual city that we live in there are hardly any gas stations. In fact, I have only filled up in our city twice in the 5 months that we've lived here. Today I was so low on gas I think I was coasting off fumes. I pulled into this very over priced gas station and do you know what happened? It was awesome. They asked for my card, filled my tank, put a screw in my license plate cover, returned my card, and I was on my way. I had no cash on me, so tipping wasn't even an option. But I'm assuming the attendant was expecting a tip. Do you agree? The price per gallon was about 20 cents over Costco's rate, so maybe they factor that in? Either way, it was a nice little treat.

I wouldn't have tipped either way, but my guess is they were expecting it. The first time I was in Oregon (you were with me, on our way to Seattle) I tried to pump my own gas and got in trouble. No self service in the whole state, so weird.

Once in LA I insisted on pumping my own gas, not realizing it was a full service station. About halfway through I realized it, but I was more comfortable making an utter fool of myself insisting that I do it myself than making a fool of myself figuring out how to tip/what was appropriate tip/afford any tip. Can someone give me a clue? And can't google help here?
