Warning- Cloth Diapers Post

We've been using gdiapers for 9 days now, so I'm practically an expert :)

I choose this brand because it offers quite a bit of flexibility; which was important because I didn't know how well this change was going to fit into our daily life.  Spencer was along for the ride, but not as interested in making the switch as I was.  What kind of flexibility you may ask?  Well the system consists of a pretty cute outer pant and a snap in liner that can either hold a compostable and flushable biodegradable insert or a cloth insert.  We transitioned into the system by just using the disposable insert for the first two days.  I would dispose of the insert in the toilet and Spencer would throw it in the trash.  Everybody is happy.  Then we attempted the cloth insert.  It took me a few tries, but we got the fit right and it's working out pretty well.

Tricks I've learned:

Have a lidded small trash can next to the laundry pail and fill it with water.  Put the dirty cloth inserts in there, and when necessary, put the liner and pant in the laundry.  Every 1.5 days dump the contents of the trash can in the wash, run a load of just the cloth, and then dry with whatever laundry I'm doing that day.

Have the diapers ready to be used, pants liner and insert pre-assembled.

When going out for awhile, use a disposable insert, they're more absorbent and you won't have to carry around a dirty cloth insert after a diaper change.

We also a stack of Pampers on hand as back up.  I don't want to get stuck sans diapers.

Money I've invested to have everything I need for now- $140.  This includes, 6 outer pants, 6 liners, 12 cloth inserts, and 160 disposable inserts.

I did it for environmental reasons and to see if I could save money.  I think I will.

Good for you! Do you think you'll stick with it when the diapers get more gross? You know when babies start solids and their diapers are horrible? I've always wondered how that goes with cloth.

Good for you. My friend almost talked me in to this a couple of times, but I just couldn't get over the initial cost as dumb as that is. You will have to let me know how it goes.

Wow Dre face, I'm with the rest of em - I want an update on this months down the road. Impressive endeavor as I know nothing can beat the convenience of disposable - but maybe the leap isn't as bad as I fear it would be? I want to know how the cloth inserts can sit before you have to do laundry. And can you just throw em in, or do you have to prewash them?

Maybe it's the grass is always green philosophy at work, but I think the dirty diapers will be easier as he gets older. Now they're less contained and I have to wash the liners 100% and pants about 50% of the time. The inserts sit in water, so it's like a pre-soak. Then when I'm ready to wash I dump the inserts and the water in which they're sitting, into my top loading washing machine and they come out smelling great.
