Day 1, Week 1, Round 1

So Kate has allergies.  It's true.  We've gone to an out of network specialist, twice, who suggested today that Kate has an allergy or an intolerance (his test couldn't tell which) to the following: milk, beef, egg yolk, soy, chocolate, coffee, brewer's yeast, wheat, rye, sugar, corn, and house dust.  To address house dust he suggested we get a fan with an air-purifier, no big deal.  For the food allergies we have broken the allergens into 3 groups:
milk and beef; corn, wheat, rye, and sugar; and last but not least, soy and brewer's yeast (vinegar).  Each of these groups will be eliminated for a two week trial, one group at a time.  That way we can determine if one group is more of a problem than another and work on desensitizing Kate to the allergens.Chocolate is now a no-no, and egg white is a pretty easy substitute - so we're just going to give those a go.   Let me tell you, my head is swimming.  Trying to keep your curious 5 year old on such a specific diet can present a few challenges, but I'm hopeful that something will come of all of this effort.  Oh yeah, Adam's skin is just like Kate's was as a baby.  So I am a guinea pig too, and we'll see if it has any effect on the babe.  Can I expect to at least shed a few baby pounds as a result?  Crossing my fingers.   I actually feel pretty lucky that so many people have studied these issues for so long and that there is a plethora of information out there.  I do wish I had paid a bit more attention in Bio 100, but c'est la vie.

oh Andrea, I never realized how awful allergies were until AJ came along. We're hoping you can pinpoint something specific in the coming weeks!

Mika and Jac had just about the same results when they went to an allergist at about Kate's age :: it really didn't turn out to be all that bad :: I don't remember exactly what happened but they seemed to be eating normal stuff as far as I remember :) Good luck and hope it works out all for the best :)

Oh man! I am so sorry Andrea! At least you have them identified though. I have a friend who experienced the same allergy issues with both of her daughters. She used to be in our ward and I believe moved before you guys came. Let me know if you want her email and I will connect you two. She might be a helpful resource!

At least its not peanuts/treenuts...That's about all the positive things I can say. Kate is living my worst nightmare. Poor girl and poor mama

HOLY COW! That is a lot of stuff. I'm sure it is not the sort of challenge you go seeking out, but I'm sure that you will deal with it in your great Andrea way - educated, headstrong, and loving. You will figure it out and then it won't be long until the adaptations you make will just be second nature. Good luck!

My sister is allergic to pretty much everything, but she has recently gotten some new allergy shots that have helped her a ton! She said that they are making so many strides in helping with allergies.

I took Trey to the allergist on Monday because there were a couple of things that made me wonder if he had them and with my sister's history, I definitely wanted to get it checked. He came up clear, but the test was possibly the worst thing ever!! Their poor backs. :( I sympathize with you having to go through that part of it.
