Bit By Bit

I know I haven't posted in awhile, a long while. I'll catch up. To get us started here is a picture of Kate. Kate's world has been turned on it's end lately. No more cereal, no more ice cream, no more cheese on her pizza. Why would a mother do this to her child? Well, I was desperate. I went to a REALLY frustrating visit with a dermatologist for Kate that went something like this...

Me: I would prefer not to give my daughter topical steroids on a daily basis.

Dr: Okay, well how about a different drug? It has been labeled a carcinogen. Only in rats though, most doctors feel that it's an unfair label.

I wish I were kidding. Elidel could be a perfectly great drug. But it was presented so terribly that I was left with a bad taste in my mouth. I went home and felt like Kate's situation was pretty desperate. Her eczema was covering about 60% of her body and she was unhappy :( What was a mother to do?

I asked around, told others about my experience, and had a few people suggest that her eczema was a reaction to a food allergy. Okay. So you start by removing milk from their diet... And it worked. It has been really great not putting drugs on her multiple times a day. I'm glad they're available for people who really need them. But Kate's not one of those people, and I'm so happy we've found a solution to our problem. I'm also grateful for vegans. The packaged substitutes and recipes have been a life saver as we've transitioned our kitchen and meals to dairy free.

I'm so glad that you looked into it and found what works for Kate. I've had eczema my whole life--it can really hurt sometimes and I only get it on my hands and feet!

Oh poor Kate!!! Mika and Jac had milk allergies as little kids but grew out of them so hopefully that runs in family and Kate will again be able to enjoy all of her milk products :: also humidity always made the girls eczema worse

Ugh, I've had that same problem with Isaac--all over his back and bottom. He only drinks soy milk now but I haven't been able to stop giving him yogurt and cheese, but I recognize that as my problem, but it has helped a little. Poor Kate. You're a good mom for helping her this way, I'm sure she REALLY appreciates it!

Aw that stinks. We went thru something similiar with Kaitlin at the beginning of the year. For her we found out that she's allergic to corn and shrimp along with cats and dogs. Good times! Wait to go for the natural way of things!

Oh wow; I had no idea she was having such a problem. SO awesome that you found a 'cure' though... such a bummer about the ice cream though! Good luck with flipping your whole regular cooking upside down.

That's pretty rough. I can do with out milk but no ice cream or cheese...yikes! Good luck. Hopefully you all like soy milk!

Hi Kate - Grandma now has Almond milk - have you tried that? I will make you some ice cream out of that the next time you come to visit. I hope not drinking the milk is really helping your eczema. Grandma had it when I was a teenager....all over my hands. They hurt so bad and were so ugly. I was so embarrassed that I wore gloves everywhere...You know how those teenagers react to such things. I hope you didn't inherit it all from me....maybe there were some other contributors...could we blame the clements side just at least 10%, but I notice they all have beautiful skin. Oh dear. Hope all is well soon Kate and that miserable itching will be gone. Can't wait to see you in Pooh Roo....
